Early materials include 10 receipts, 1757-1830, including 1 Jan. 1791, signed by Henry Ravenel (1751-1823) acknowleding debt owed to Sammuel Legare and James Theus, merchants of Charleston, S.C., by estate of Henry Ravenel (1729-1785); other receipts document prices of clothing, food, liquor, and transport of rice; sheets from account book, ca. 1829, listing prices of various products; and sales agreement, 17 Mar. 1834, re settlement of estate of John Stephen Ravenel by Henry Ravenel and sale of sixteen identified slaves from the estate. Land papers documenting family real estate holdings in St. John's Parish, S.C., include plats, 18 Feb. 1791, 26 Mar. 1793, 1 Apr. 1806, and undated, including plat of Wantoot plantation, 19 Sept. 1865, owned by Daniel Ravenel, and crediting Richard Y. Macbeth with copying the plat from a survey made 1 Apr. 1795 by Ja[me]s G. Weare; Wantoot plat includes small drawing of manor house next to three rows of slave cabins; canal divides Wantoot from tract labeled Somerton. Genealogical information, 5 items,1791-1894, includes epitaphs from Morristown, N.J. and elsewhere; baptismal records; and two-page translation [ca. 1890s] of marriage certificate, 24 Oct. 1687, of Rene Ravenel, aged 21, and Charlotte de St. Julian, aged 18, who were married at Pumpkin Hill Plantation in South Carolina.

The son of Daniel Ravenel (1762-1807) and Catherine C. Prioleau (1769-1849), Daniel Ravenel the younger was an attorney, banker, and writer of Charleston, S.C.
